Camps & Outdoor Education
Growing through challenge, connecting through experience
Through camps, outdoor education and residential experiences, Huntingtower students are encouraged to step beyond the familiar. From a student's very first overnight camp through to senior residential experiences and the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, every opportunity has a purpose.
Each experience is carefully designed to build on the one before it, creating a progression of challenge and growth that supports every stage of a student's development. Students gradually develop greater independence and responsibility while strengthening their communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills. Whether navigating the outdoors or working together to overcome challenges, each experience helps prepare students not only for school, but for life. As they journey alongside their peers, they build resilience and lasting friendships while developing a deeper understanding of themselves, others and the world around them.
Junior School Outdoor Education
Outdoor Education begins in the Junior School with a carefully sequenced program of camps and curriculum-based educational tours. Each experience fosters a lifelong connection to the natural world in our students as they face challenges and make happy memories with their classmates.
Year 2
Outdoor exploration at Lyrebird Park in Yellingbo (one night camp). Students enjoy a great range of teamwork activities including tug-o-war, archery, bushwalking and damper making.
Year 3 & Year 4
Students dive into a world of adventure and environmental activities designed to spark curiosity and a love of nature, alternating each year between Briars Camp in Mount Martha and The Ranch in Boneo (two night camp).
Year 5
In November, students experience a two night camp at Bayview Adventure Camp, including low ropes, canoeing, giant swing, radio runabout and flying fox. Year 5 students also enjoy a full-day visit to historical Sovereign Hill mid-year, complete with gold panning, mine tour, candle dipping and the Aura Light Show, which brings the History curriculum to life.
Year 6
Students enjoy a two night camp at Peninsula Outdoors in Merricks where they enjoy coastal experiences including surf lessons. Year 6 students also complete a three night educational trip to Canberra in May to complement their studies on government, democracy, leadership and decision making.
Residential Program (Years 7 - 12)
Huntingtower's Residential Program provides opportunities for students to learn, grow and connect beyond the classroom.
Each residential experience is thoughtfully designed to encourage students to step outside their comfort zones, strengthen friendships and develop confidence through shared experiences.
Programs may include:
- Year 7: Team-building and orientation at Anglesea
- Year 8: Gilwell Park adventure challenges
- Year 9: Aquathon, Urban Adventures and Adventurous Journey (Mount Buller ski camp)
- Year 10: Lake Nillahcootie
- Year 11: Future Ready Week and Uluru Adventure
- Year 12: Personal goal setting and wellbeing activities in Lorne
These experiences encourage students to develop initiative, perseverance, adaptability and compassion while learning to contribute positively within a community.
As students progress through the Secondary School, the Residential Program continues to build upon these foundations, supporting them to become capable, thoughtful and future-ready young people.
Duke of Edinburgh's International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award is one of the world's leading youth development programs, empowering young people to discover their strengths, build resilience and make a positive contribution to their communities.
At Huntingtower, students are encouraged to embrace the challenge of the Award, progressing through the Bronze, Silver and Gold levels as they develop new skills, serve others and push beyond their comfort zones. Each level of the Award is built around four key areas of personal growth: Skills, Physical Recreation, Voluntary Service and Adventurous Journeys.
The Award is a student-driven journey, with participants taking responsibility for setting personal goals, choosing activities, managing their progress and completing the requirements of each level. Huntingtower supports students throughout the process, providing guidance, encouragement and opportunities to help them work towards their Award.
