Academic Pursuits

Challenge Your Thinking

We encourage students to put their knowledge and skills to the test through a diverse range of academic competitions and enrichment opportunities.

Across Mathematics, Science, English, Humanities, Languages, debating, chess and other disciplines, students can participate in challenges at school, interschool, state and national level. These experiences provide opportunities to think differently, solve complex problems, communicate ideas and discover strengths and interests that may take their learning in unexpected directions.

Tournament of Minds

An exciting international problem-solving program that challenges students to work collaboratively, think creatively and develop innovative solutions to complex, open-ended challenges. Working in teams, students explore one of four disciplines - STEM, The Arts, Language Literature, or Social Sciences - and spend several weeks researching, designing and presenting their solution before also tackling an unseen challenge on competition day.

Maths Olympiad

Provides talented and highly motivated students with the opportunity to extend their mathematical thinking beyond the classroom through challenging problem-solving activities and competitions. Students tackle complex, non-routine problems that require creativity, logical reasoning and perseverance, developing advanced skills in mathematical analysis and critical thinking. With pathways to progress to advanced Olympiad national levels, the competition identifies and nurtures Australia’s most promising young mathematicians.

Write A Book In A Day

Creative writers can also put their imaginations to work through opportunities such as Write a Book in a Day, a competition run by the Kids' Cancer Project. Teams collaborate to plan, write, illustrate and publish an entire book within just 12 hours. Huntingtower students have achieved outstanding success in the competition, including being named National Middle Years winners in 2024.

Huntingtower students can participate in a broad range of co-curricular activities and competitions, including:

  • Australian Chemistry Quiz
  • Australian Mathematics Competition
  • Australian Science Competition
  • Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition
  • Big Science Competition
  • Chess State Finals
