Carnivals

Nutcracker-5

Several carnivals are held in the Junior School, the main ones being Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country and Ball Games. Some Junior School carnivals are held on site and for others the students experience the added excitement of competing at another venue. Year 6 House Captains help the sports staff prepare for the carnival and parent involvement in a multitude of ways is encouraged and always appreciated.

Clubs and Activities

A variety of activities within, before and after the school day are available to various age groups. Activities include Aerobics, Basketball (Click Huntingtower Heat for more information), Chamber Choir, Chess, Early Risers, Junior Choir, Junior Orchestra, Little Choir, Little Symphony, LOTE Club, Philosophy Groups and Tennis.

Competitions

Students have the opportunity to participate in many competitions such as the University of New South Wales Academic Competitions, Tournament of Minds, Poetry, Art, Music Eisteddfods, Maths Olympiads and Science Talent Search. Some of these involve an out-of-hours component.

ELF

Environmental Leaders of the Future (ELF) is a group of students in the Junior School with a particular interest in the environment, conservation and sustainability. They meet on a regular basis and, with the guidance and support of staff, are proactive in ensuring that the Junior School community is aware of relevant issues and how we need to think and act.

House System

There are two Houses in the Junior School. These are Ruthven (red) and Thompson (yellow). Children are allocated to a house part way through Prep. Children from the same family are normally placed in the same house. Year 6 House Captains serve for a term.

Junior School Council

Children in the Junior School are given opportunities to participate on the Junior School Council, serving for a term at a time. They begin to learn how meetings are run, how to organise simple events and how to present their ideas to a large group in Assemblies. The Junior School Council is an invaluable asset and, with the guidance and support of staff members, helps with ideas and organisation of several of the Junior School Charity and community outreach events.

Leadership Opportunities

P1080022

Opportunities  to acquire leadership skills begin at an early age. Activities such as involvement in ELF and Junior School Council and being given responsibility to be a monitor for the giant chess board, playground equipment or lunch orders all help students learn that others depend on them to carry out a task. By the time students reach Year 6, Junior School leadership and its responsibilities and privileges plays a prominent role. Year 6 students take on roles such as House Captains and Music Captains, Play Leaders and Library Monitors. They are encouraged to be good role models and  play an important role in helping younger students.

Music Tuition

Huntingtower has an exceptionally strong music tradition and the majority of Junior School students learn at least one instrument on an individual basis. The Director of Music is happy to offer advice about such matters as the choice of a suitable instrument and when to start lessons. Many students begin individual tuition in Prep. Instrumental teachers collect younger students from classrooms and escort them to the Music Centre for their lessons. Music theory lessons are also available. AMEB Music exams in theory and performance may be sat.

Outdoor Education/ Educational Tours

Time away develops confidence, courage, independence and resilience and allows children to discover and explore new possibilities. Year 2 students experience a day camp as their first taste of outdoor education off site. Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 all attend overnight outdoor education camps at a variety of venues. Every second year, Year 5 and Year 6 students spend five days in Canberra on an educational tour, learning about government and exploring our nation’s capital city.

Learning Enrichment

The Junior School has a specialist Learning Enrichment teacher. Small groups of children and also individuals are catered for within Learning Enrichment sessions at various times. Program are developed and adapted in consultation with classroom teachers.
